One of the first waterways you can venture along is the Hillsboro Canal. It connects and runs west of Pioneer Park. The Hillsboro Canal forms the border between Broward County and Palm Beach County for much of its length. The Hillsboro Canal actually starts at Lake Okeechobee near the city of Belle Glade. Of the grand distance, 10 miles are often used for recreational boating and fishing.
When you head east from Pioneer Park you will approach a junction that allows you to choose to explore further to the north or south.
From the junction and for those that choose to head north they will reach the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. This path of water expands more than 1,100 miles from Norfolk, VA to Key West, FL. Along this waterway you will come across natural inlets, salt-water rivers, bays, and man-made canals. Heading north along the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway will connect you to Lake Boca Raton, Lake Wyman and Lake Rogers. You’ll find a collection of boats anchored in these lakes, enjoying the Florida sun. You can often stand in the water up to your waist, while over Lake Boca Raton. From Lake Boca Raton you can connect to the Boca Inlet. out to the open Atlantic Ocean.
From the junction and for those that choose to head south they will pass through the Hillsboro River. The Hillsboro River runs between the city of Hillsboro Beach and the city of Lighthouse Point. Further south along the Hillsboro River will reach the Hillsboro Inlet and the Hillsboro Lighthouse. This will connect you to the wide open Atlantic Ocean.
